[CPN] WingTips Newsletter from DIA

Denver International Airport | WingTips E-News | October 2012

South Terminal
We are building more than a 500-room Westin hotel and commuter rail station at Denver International Airport. The South Terminal Redevelopment Program is sparking economic growth in the metro area, creating up to 1,000 jobs, including 600 to 700 construction and design jobs and more than 200 permanent hotel jobs, plus generating $2 million annually for Denver's general fund.

Today, 152 firms are working on the South Terminal Redevelopment Program. Of these, 134 are local firms or have a significant local presence, including 88 businesses with minority or women ownership. The airport is committed to supporting local businesses working on the program through educational opportunities, prime engagement, and workforce development. The Train's A-Comin'!
Anyone driving to or from DIA over the past several months has undoubtedly noticed the progress RTD is making on its East Rail Line, the commuter train link that will connect the airport to Denver's Union Station in just a few short years. Last June, RTD and Denver Transit Partners began construction on the 1,953-foot bridge that will carry the commuter rail over Peña Boulevard. Work is well underway on the north side of the roadway, where motorists can clearly see the caissons and piers being built to support the massive structure..

Our partners at RTD have scheduled a series of open houses throughout the month of October, intended to introduce the public to its contractor, Denver Transit Partners, and to share information on current and upcoming construction. If you're curious about the aesthetics of the East Rail Line stations, this is also your chance to see the latest architectural renderings of RTD's plans. For more information on the October open houses, visit: http://www.rtd-fastracks.com/ec_26

All part of its multibillion dollar FasTracks Program, RTD's rail construction at DIA might affect some automobile traffic, with off-street work, detours, intermittent lane restrictions, and limited nighttime road closures. For the latest and greatest information on impacts caused by RTD's comprehensive transit expansion, including construction information, land and road closures, be sure to visit: http://www.rtd-fastracks.com/ep3_26

DIA Implements a New Surface Management System
Denver International Airport has implemented a new airport surface management system to enhance operational efficiency. Aerobahn®, a product of Saab Sensis, was selected through a competitive bid process to develop a system that combines airline operational information, such as flight schedules, with a real-time, comprehensive view of aircraft activity, giving controllers a plane's exact location on the airfield.

"Aerobahn will increase the safety and efficiency of aircraft movement on the airport surface, and facilitate communication and collaboration between system users: ramp tower, FAA Tower, FAA approach control (TRACON), FAA Enroute Center, airlines (Delta, Frontier, Southwest, United), and deicers," said Keith Mays, ramp tower manager.

The new system is expected to decrease delay times and airline operating costs. An added benefit may be fewer jet engine emissions. Denver International Airport invested $2.44 million for Aerobahn's service and sensors. Even if this technology saves only five seconds a day, the airlines are projected to save $2.2 million a year.

Each authorized user at DIA has access to the secure, browser-based Aerobahn with the ability to customize the service to meet their individual operational needs. Thirty sensors mounted on numerous airport buildings communicate with the software to pinpoint specific aircraft.

All operations are recorded for future playback to identify trends and develop new procedures to mitigate delays or other events in the future. Aerobahn also provides the ability to create reports for detailed analysis of operations.

Aerobahn is the most widely deployed airport surface management system in the aviation industry. It is used by airlines, airport operators, and air navigation service providers around the world.

DIA Hosts Airfield Marking Symposium
DIA was proud to host Sightline Airfield Marking Consultants' "2012 Western Region Airfield Marking Symposium" on September 17.

Participants from nine states and several Colorado airports attended the two-day event, which covered FAA standards for airport markings (stripes, numbers, and other indicators on airfield pavements), using the Airfield Marking Handbook and real-world solutions for removing and applying pavement markings to meet FAA Part 139 specifications.

Day one featured Sightline's classroom study of materials and specifications, followed by an on-site demonstration by Waterblasting Technologies, using one of its "Stripe Hog" trucks (see photo below), which remove markings with water under high-pressure. DIA's Field Maintenance operators were there to answer any questions about Denver's removal program for both markings and aircraft tire rubber.

Day two, featured Sightline's classroom study of proper application and inspection methods, followed by on-site application demonstrations. Ennis-Flint installed both AirMark and methyl methacrylate thermoplastic markings. Paint application and a "Robo Beader" demonstration (planting luminescent beads within paint) were provided by DIA's paint crew members, who had ready answers to questions about Denver's pavement marking program. TSA Pre✓™ Now at DIA
Highlighted in last month's WingTips, TSA Pre✓™ is now at DIA and has a designated lane located at the south passenger screening checkpoint in Jeppesen Terminal (currently the eastern-most lane). TSA Pre✓™ is designed to enhance security and at the same time expedite processing by pre-screening individuals who volunteer information about themselves prior to flying. Eligible participants include certain frequent flyers invited from participating airlines (Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, United Airlines and US Airways) as well as U.S. citizens who are members of the U.S. Customs and Border Protection's Trusted Traveler programs (Global Entry, SENTRI, and NEXUS) and who fly on a participating airline.

Through the TSA Pre✓™ vetting process, information is embedded in a barcode on a passenger's boarding pass. Only at the TSA Pre✓™ lane will security personnel be able to read the barcode to see if a passenger is eligible for expedited screening. TSA Pre✓™ travelers will not have to remove the following items when they go through screening: a belt, shoes, a laptop from its case, outerwear or jacket, and a 3-1-1 compliant liquids/gels bag from carry-on luggage. TSA will always incorporate random screening and unpredictable security measures throughout the airport, so no individual will be guaranteed expedited screening.

Icelandair Adds Flights
The Denver Business Journal reported that Icelandair will begin flying six times weekly between Denver and Iceland's capital, Reykjavik, beginning summer 2013. The airline started its nonstop service in May and currently offers four flights every week.

The increase of flight frequency is the result of better-than-forecasted passenger loads. To view the Denver Business Journal article, follow this link:

Spirit Airlines Begins DIA to Phoenix-Mesa Service
Spirit Airlines started daily nonstop service between DIA and Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport on Oct. 4, 2012. Spirit returned to Denver last May and the airline is already expanding its local offerings. Spirit's fall and winter schedule from Denver now includes daily nonstop service to Chicago O'Hare, Dallas/Fort Worth (twice daily), Fort Lauderdale, Las Vegas (twice daily) and Phoenix-Mesa, as well as one-stop service to Los Angeles and New York LaGuardia.

"We are delighted to see this new flight and new nonstop destination added to our robust domestic network," said Aviation Manager Kim Day. "Each new flight brings greater choice to our traveling public and we are grateful to Spirit for this further commitment to Denver."

Spirit's Barry Biffle, chief marketing officer, said, "We're thrilled to continue saving consumers money and satisfying their need for affordable low fares as we offer the best value in travel. Spirit's ultra low fares and optional add-ons provide customers a total price that's tough to beat."
