Arvada Offers Child Safety Classes for Adults and Children

 

 Arvada, CO – In response to community concerns stemming from the recent Jessica Ridgeway case in Westminster, the Arvada Police Department has partnered with the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office and the Ralston House to offer a series of child safety classes for both adults and children.

 

 Stranger Awareness

 The Arvada Police Department offers Stranger Awareness classes geared toward school-aged children. Arvada Police volunteers, working in conjunction with the Jefferson County District Attorney’s office, host this free one-hour class. The class will teach children what to do if a stranger approaches them or if they are lost, and reviews different stranger scenarios to reinforce the information. Classes are on a first come, first served basis and will be offered:

·         Sunday, Oct. 21 from 3:00-4:00 pm at the Arvada Library (7525 West 57th Avenue)

·         Sunday, Oct. 28 from 1:00-2:00 pm at Sound Body Sound Mind Fitness (14615 W. 64th  Ave.),

·         Tuesday, Oct. 30 from 6:00-7:00 pm at the Arvada Library,

·         Monday, Nov. 5 from 4:00-5:00 pm at the Arvada Library,

·         Wednesday, Nov. 7 from 6:30-7:30 pm at the YMCA (6350 Eldridge St.),

·         Tuesday, Nov. 13 from 4:00-5:00 pm at the Arvada Library, and

·         Sunday, Nov. 18 from 3:00-4:00 pm at the Stanley Lake Library (8485 Kipling Street).

 

 Protect Your Child

The Ralston House is hosting two Protect Your Child classes with additional classes being planned. These classes will be held on Saturday, October 20, 9 a.m. – 11 a.m. and Wednesday, October 24, 5:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. at the Apex Center, located at 13150 W. 72nd Avenue. The class discusses behaviors and patterns of sexual predators that can be identified, as well as general things a parent can do to help protect their child(ren). Other topics covered are:

·         Stranger Danger/Violent Offenders

·         Sexual Abuse Overview

·         Perpetrator Characteristics

·         Grooming

·         Preventing Abuse

·         How to Talk to Your Children About Sexual Abuse and Strangers

 

This class is for adults only.  The information and material presented are not suitable for children. Apex Center childcare is available for $4/hour. The class is free, but a suggested $10 donation will benefit the Ralston House.
