--Sounds like ya'll had a great ride, but so did I...
Went up Yankee Hill Rd above Central City on dual sports with Dave Bosley and his friend Mountain Eagle (ADV screen name). We had blue skies, gray skies, dirt, rock, mud, water, snow, sunshine , ATV's, Jeeps, other MC's, hot, cold, gulches, plateaus, dead ends, and a dead bike.
Boz's had a short to ground, fried the 30 amp main fuse, and a couple of others, traced it to a pinched wire after trailside removal of... side panels, seat, tank, headlight, and other numerous electrical additions, etc... Trouble shooting at its finest! It was an awesome display of working through the problem, disconnecting unneeded circuits (think Apollo 13 movie), finding the issue, making due with under-amp spare fuses, frying those, and giving it another go. Getting power, re-starting, running again, and... OOPS, killing it again.
... SHIT
This time we all new where to dig, what to do next, where to find the problem, what tools to get out, what to remove (think Nascar pit stop, on 4-whl trail in the snow), fixed the ROOT CAUSE OF THE PINCHED WIRE (2ND PINCHED WIRE AND SHORT TO GROUND), removed the offending bracket, made due with zip ties, buttoned things up and away we go. Yee-Haa, no problemo! It was a hell-of-a-good day.
Advise: get extra fuses for your bikes and carry them with you, (if Mtn. Eagle had not had a baggie full, we would have been S.O.L. in the high country back woods), make sure you have the tools needed to take off panels, covers, seats, lights, fairings, and such, to expose the real stuff underneath. You can fix things and get your bike running again, and get back home, with a little perseverence.
Cheers, what a great ride!
