What you said ... or if the bike is already down. Whether you are the rider, or the rider is injured, it may be easier to reach the kill switch than to try to turn the ignition key to off.
Otherwise on EFI bikes, it doesn't make a lick of difference if you are shutting it off at the end of a ride in your garage. I primarily drop the side stand to kill the engine and then turn off the key. Never had a problem in doing that.

--Dan: I think the point of the MSF training is to instill an "automatic" reaction to shutting down the bike, the thought being that in an emergency you won't have time to think about a different way of shutting the bike off, you'll just automatically do it the way you've gotten into the habit of doing it.I'm not sure why the kill switch is preferred over the ignition key - my two guesses would be:1. By shutting off the ignition you reduce risk of fire, or2. Because you can flick the kill switch with your thumb without removing your hands from the handlebars, reducing the chance that you'll lose control, whereas turning a key always requires removing either the left or right hand from the handlebar.Anyway, as I said those are guesses. Any MSF instructors here?MartinFrom: Dan Pilcher <dpilcher@cochamber.com>

I always shut my mikes off by turning the key. My thought is to only use the kill switch in an emergency, like falling over, etc.But perhaps Phil at Erico's can enlighten us?DanFrom: emrat@googlegroups.com [mailto:emrat@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Brandon Hinds

FWIW I never use mine either. When I took the ERC in 2009 the instructors were always on me for shutting off my engine with the key instead of the kill switch.

Not sure what happened, or if I'll have problems down the road, but that's where I'm at.ps - I have no idea where my kill switch is, or even if I have one. :)On Mon, Mar 10, 2014 at 11:25 AM, Dan Pilcher <dpilcher@cochamber.com> wrote:I'll confess to accidentally hitting the kill switch at different times and then wondering why the bike will not start!
One precaution that I take prior to washing a bike is to put black electrical tape over the ignition keyhole, just to make sure that no water gets into the ignition switch. I think I learned that trick from Peter Sharp . . .
