Chris, this sounds like an issue with the switch on the clutch lever. Check the connection wire to a little button that the lever pushes when you pull the clutch all the way in. Another thing you might try, is to use the adjustment dial on the clutch to have a longer pull. If you have it set so that the clutch lever is at the closest position to the bar (for a shorter squeeze) try letting it out, pull the clutch and try to start.
If the bike dies and you need to restart it quickly, having to put it in neutral can be a pain.

So the bike wouldn't start with the kickstand up and not in neutral. So, I put it in neutral and everything starts fine. Not sure what happened, or if I'll have problems down the road, but that's where I'm at.
ps - I have no idea where my kill switch is, or even if I have one. :)

One precaution that I take prior to washing a bike is to put black electrical tape over the ignition keyhole, just to make sure that no water gets into the ignition switch. I think I learned that trick from Peter Sharp . . .
