2013 Welcome from Councilwoman Kniech

Last month I commented on the unity we felt around the Broncos winning streak and keeping the National Western Stock Show in Denver.  This month we must decide, are we fair weather fans or die hards?  We were all disappointed, some shocked, at the Bronco’s freezing cold playoff loss.  But as I watched Peyton Manning gracefully congratulate Ravens players before leaving the field, I knew that this was a QB and a team worth sticking with.  The test of a leader, a team, a City, is not whether or not we make mistakes or have bad days, but whether we learn from those mistakes, whether we blame or take responsibility, whether we adapt, overcome them.  Die hard fans understand that and stick around when the going gets tough.

Your city is hard at work expanding library hours, setting up new youth programs, and recruiting the next generation of officers and fire fighters, an exciting achievement that 74% of voters tuned in to be a part of.   As that excitement fades, and we move to the more mundane tasks of greening our solid waste system, or finding transportation funding to complete FasTracks and repair ailing bridges and roads, like the I-70 Viaduct, will Denver’s fans stick with us?   As we struggle to replace plummeting federal funds for new housing with a more sustainable, local source of revenue?

How about as the Civil Service Commission, at the behest of the Mayor and members of Council like myself, reforms the procedures governing disciplinary hearings?  The public has been clear in expressing its concern, your Commissioners and Elected Officials have heard you, have analyzed the process, and have redesigned an appeals process to move faster, with greater clarity to restore your trust.  Will you join us in rallying around our hardworking officers, who have shrunk in numbers as our population has grown?  Will you let them know that we do have high standards, but that we appreciate and admire the job they do, seeing things we couldn’t imagine, putting their lives on the line, keeping us safe, working as our partners in a more community-oriented approach as we fortify the force with new recruits?

I hope you do.  Be mad at us, let us know how we can do better, disagree with our play calls—every fan’s right--but keep showing up for the games, even during the arctic blasts.

Forward.  Together.

We Mean Business:  Where Will Denver’s Next Generation of Manufacturing Employees Come From?  Moving Beyond the Four D’s

Denver is hovering at 8% unemployment (FRED database via U.S. Department of Labor: Bureau of Labor Statistics), but manufacturers report an aging workforce and difficulty recruiting the next generation of skilled manufacturing employees.  Denver’s Office of Economic Development, Division of Workforce Development is seeking to help solve this conundrum, and hosted the first of three forums with manufacturing companies on November 30 at GeoTech Environmental Equipment, Inc. in Northeast Denver.

Two themes emerged:

1) The importance of dispelling the myth that all manufacturing jobs are:  DIRTY, DANGEROUS, DUMB, and DISAPPEARING.

 2) Ways the industry might continue to adapt to attract and train the next generation of employees.

More for facts about manufacturing.
